The Election is Over, Now What?

Hands held up holding "I voted" sign

For all of 2024, ecoAmerica supported Climate Ambassadors, partners, friends, and the wider community to Get Out the Vote with a Climate Voter Pledge, Know Your Rights GuideCandidate Assessment Tool and many reminders and much encouragement. The Climate Ambassador program sponsored the Election Earth campaign that shared resources and supported actions for the Ambassador community, and they took action by joining in letter and postcard writing campaigns, calling, preaching on the importance of voting, and teaching why voting for climate matters.

In partnership with the National Baptist Convention, USA, the Why Vote Climate Justice info sheet was created and used by several denominations. I served on a Sacred Right to Vote panel for Third Act Faith, spoke about the importance of voting climate, published a blog on voting, and made many social media posts. One Home One Future shared the collection of voting resources from many partners who all did all they could to support a climate and faith vote.

I have been blown away by all the ways this community stepped up this year. Dayenu led the Chutzpah voting campaign, Green Faith hosted weekly virtual meetings for calling voters, Interfaith Power and Light provided resources, a preaching webinar, and a strong social media campaign. The National Council of Churches, The Episcopal Church, The Catholic Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and many more encouraged and resourced their members to vote their faith.

The election is now over. Please pause for a moment to honor all the ways the faith and climate community worked collaboratively to get Americans to the polls this election season. Virtual high fives and hugs to the ecoAmerica team, Climate Ambassadors, and Blessed Tomorrow partners and friends. Thank you for all you have done to live out your faith by educating and encouraging people to vote faith and climate. Thank you for all the ways you have modeled your faith by living out your values caring for creation and working for climate justice. Together, we have made a difference.

Now give yourself a little time and space to rest. If you are able, go for a walk or a hike, take a nap, read a book, do an art, baking or cooking project, or anything that brings peace to your body and spirit. Connect with other faith-filled people and your faith community for support. Know that you are not alone in this moment or in this work.

Once you have rested, get out a journal and make a list of all the things you can do in 2025 to move climate solutions forward in the faith community and beyond. Commit to at least one action a month that helps expand understanding and engagement on creation care and climate justice. There has never been a more important time to live your faith out loud, to lead with courage and conviction, to be a channel for peace. Remember that we are in this together and with the strength, guidance, and support of the Creator, we will lead the faith community to protect and heal creation and achieve climate justice!
